Your tooth enamel is made up of microscopic mineral crystals structures. While this makes tooth enamel very strong, it is not impervious to erosion caused by consuming acidic foods, beverages and the bacteria in your mouth. As time goes on this process, known as demineralization, can create microscopic pores and channels in your tooth enamel.

Prolonged enamel erosion can create microscopic channels through the enamel, exposing the sensitive dentin layer of the tooth. Common symptoms include a sharp pain or ache when you eat or drink something that is hot, cold, sweet or acidic.

Increasing your teeth’s exposure to fluoride helps to restore the mineral density of your tooth enamel. This process is known as remineralization, and effectively counters enamel erosion.

If one of Basking Ridge Dental Group’s dentists sees significant signs of enamel erosion on your teeth, they might recommend a treatment strategy designed to increase your fluoride exposure in multiple ways.

This often includes a basic fluoride treatment, fluoride supplements and brushing your teeth with toothpaste that includes added fluoride. With a diligent approach to the treatment strategy your dentist suggests, many of the complications of enamel erosion can be reduced or outright prevented.

If you’ve struggled with tooth sensitivity problems, you should call Basking Ridge Dental Group’s clinic in Basking Ridge, New Jersey at 908-509-4428 to explore methods for increasing your fluoride exposure. We look forward to helping you have a healthy mouth!
