If you want to prevent bad breath that won’t go away, loose or sensitive teeth, and tender or bleeding gums, there are simple things you can do at home. These are all signs of gingivitis (gum disease) and they are symptoms which you really don’t want to ignore!
While your dentist will clear away tartar buildup at your six month’s cleaning appointment, you can make a difference day-to-day by staying on top of your brushing and flossing habits.
–Brush your teeth twice a day with a soft bristled toothbrush. This is good to use around your gums and gum line, not just your teeth.
–Don’t forget to use a fluoride toothpaste! Fluoride protects your tooth enamel from wearing down.
–A good flossing program is the next step, as it preserves your gums and gum line.
–Finally, rinsing with an antibacterial mouthwash which will kill those plaque building bacteria.
If you avoid smoking and dehydration, you teeth and gums will work with you for a good long time to stay healthy. Both cause dry mouth which diminishes the amount of saliva that protects your teeth and gums from acid forming bacteria.
Taking good care of your oral health will go a long way to preventing tooth loss. A healthy smile starts with healthy teeth (and gums). Working together, you and your dentist can make an unstoppable team!
